Deer Valley ~ Salt Lake City, Utah
June 28, 2002

Here's a belated review of the Deer Valley, UT concert. Dan casually walked out on the stage unannounced. As he stepped into his spot center stage, the voice from "Greetings from the West" announced "Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Dan Fogelberg". (Was this the recording or does that guy from the album tour with Dan?? I'd guess the former.) The formal announcement was kind of funny considering that Dan was already out there. He dedicated the concert to "one of the fallen giants", the Who bassist who passed away that day. I got the feeling he and the band were a bit shook about that, and worried that it would cast a pall over the evening, but I was quite pleasantly surprised. Dan was more entertaining than I have ever seen him. As he looked out at the brand new condos lining the ski slope, he commented about how "those weren't here last time" ('98?) and joked that he should have "put his credit card in his pocket" because "those probably sell for what, two or three dollars?". He also performed some guitar licks then played "stump the audience". I can't remember what he played, but he claimed it was the first time he ever stumped an audience. (I guesss we're not "U-tards" for nothing). The set list was similar (if not the same) as reported for other concerts, and because of the 10pm noise ordinance it was not one of his longer concerts. For me the musical highlights included a long, phenomenal(!!) introduction to "Changing Horses", the best rendition of "Same Old Lang Syne" that I have ever heard, and an absolutely wonderful rendition of "Empty Cages" (I have not been able to get that song out of my head for a week!!) As much as I like to hear Dan sing Dan songs, I really enjoyed it when he highlighted the other members of the band with "Rocky Mountain Way", "Strange Way" and a blues tune who's name I can't recall. It gave you the feeling that the night was all about "music" not just all about "him". He really seemed rather humble.

It really must have been a good concert, because my husband, in my absence, told one of our friends that it was very good. And while he likes Dan just fine, lets face it, he's not nuts about the music like I am, and in all honesty, went to the concert because that’s the kind of thing married folks do and because he wanted to see what a concert at Deer Valley was like. Deer Valley is a very first class place, Where else does the concession stand sell caesar salad, grilled chicken on focaccia (spelling?) and minted lemonade? (Try a sprig or two of your garden mint in lemonade, it is really yummy!). It proved to be a good experience for my husband, because right in front of the stage he spied a guy that he swears was our old "pizza man", who was singing along, cheering and gesturing, clearly really into the music. (His wife/companion was covering her face a lot!) It made my husband realize that while he thinks I am a bit overboard in my appreciation of Dan's music, I am not really the crazed fan I could be.

The only down side to the evening was that the concert wasn't longer, but watching some very stern looking Deer Valley official give the "ONE" signal to the sound man before Dan stepped out for the encore, made me think that the took the 10pm curfew pretty seriously, Dan commented that he was told he must be done in 6 minutes, so we only got one song, George Harrison tune.

Oh yeah, a second downside- we sat right next to the roped off area that my husband overheard was reserved for "sponsors", where a group of women proceeded to yak the night away. And they weren't whispering among themselves either. They were especially rude for Cindy Bullens, the warm up act, but didn't show Dan much respect either. Does VIP stand for "Very Ignorant People" ?

To end on an up note, right in front of us sat a family with two children, a boy and a girl ages maybe 6 and 4, who danced the night away!!! It was quite entertaining!!!

While vacationing in Sundance, I caught Dan's concert at Deer Valley.  It was basically the same show I saw at the end of May in Houston.  He was even wearing the same Hawaiian shirt!  Rocky Mountain Way was fun to hear and Dan seemed to have fun playing it.  I couldn't help but wonder if he was enjoying himself or merely going through the motions.  Any thoughts on this from others?  There was a ten o'clock curfew, so there was one encore of If I Needed Someone.

A female artist named Cindy something opened and she had a great voice and did quite a bit of name dropping of artists she's worked with throughout her career.  Most of her music was written about a daughter she lost and it seemed inappropriate in lieu of the recent Elizabeth Smart kidnapping in Salt Lake City.
