I Once Knew What Love Could Be

I once knew what love could be
Moonlit nights and candle lights when you were here with me
Teddy bear feelings in my heart, and gentle spring time rains
But why, oh why did you have to go and leave me here, leave me here with my pain

I once walked in love with you
Midnight rides up mountain sides to show you the view
Rose petal mornings and daffodil smiles and cattail afternoons
A scribbled note on your pillow at dawn let me know it had ended all too soon

How am I supposed to trust my heart
Am I to make believe that nothing's wrong
In this mixed up world where love's a game
No one stays in love very long

How am I supposed to love next time
I can't believe in some nursery rhyme
Where the shoe will fit just like a glove
And the story ends with every one in love

I once gave you my very life
Late night talks and Autumn walks then you became my wife
Cottonwood Sundays in the sun, and velvet meadow streams
Now my nights I spend alone, brushing back the tears of my dreams

I once knew what love could be
Silly notes and sailing boats adrift upon the sea
Whippoorwill waltzing in the eve, and those silky satin dawns
Now your gone and I'm alone looking for the strength to carry on

How am I supposed to love next time
I can't believe in some nursery rhyme
Where the shoe will fit just like a glove
And the story ends with every one in love

How am I supposed to trust my heart
Am I to make believe that nothing's wrong
In this mixed up world where love's a game
And no one stays in love very long
Where no one stays in love very long
Where no one stays in love at all
