Next Time

This song is on Dan Fogelberg's album "Captured Angel" released September 1975-This was the first of Dan's albums I bought-I have this CD
I have told you all about my friend Patty Sneed that passed away May 21,2022-She is buried in the Mesa, Arizona cemetery across the street from where I live behind her dad Dale Sneed
She was the one that introduced me to the music of Dan Fogelberg in 1975 when she put this album on the turntable for me to listen to when I was there with her at her mom Karen's house at 3577 East Tremaine Avenue in Gilbert, Arizona
Dale Sneed owned Allied Concrete on the corner of Center Street and Lehi Road in Mesa, Arizona and I worked for him for 2 months in 1980 when I got out of the Navy
From time to time, I go over to that cemetery and talk to both of them-I believe that they can hear me talking to them while they are in heaven
Dan promoted the album with a tour in support of the Eagles
The album was produced by Fogelberg-He alone recorded all of the instrumental parts before being convinced by his label to allow for a few re-recordings and contributions by other musicians
The majority of the album was recorded at a studio in South Pekin, Illinois; Fogelberg had returned home to care for his ill father
Stereo Review praised Fogelberg's musicianship but wrote that as a singer "he sounds raw, unsure, and at times even amateurish, particularly when any emotionality is involved."
I praise Dan's musicianship too but strongly disagree with the rest of what Stereo review had to say about him

One too many days I've felt forgotten
And one too many nights I've slept alone
And every time I watch the fruit turn rotten
I tell myself I'll try a little harder next time
Whoa oh next time

Sacred are the ties that love entrusts us
Even if they fray before they bind
And I'm afraid I never did you justice
So I'm going to feel my love a little stronger
Make it last a little longer next time
Whoa oh next time

Well next time I ain't gonna fall on my knees
And come out of love empty handed
But next time I'll be even harder to please
Oh when will the next time be
When will the next time be

Well next time I ain't gonna fall on my knees for nobody
And come out of love empty handed
But next time I'll be even harder to please
Oh when will the next time be
When will the next time be

One too many days I've felt forgotten by you
And one too many nights I've slept alone
And every time I watch the fruit turn rotten
I tell myself I'll try a little harder
Play my cards a little smarter next time
Whoa oh next time
