Paramount Theatre ~ Denver Colorado ~ July 16, 2001

Just returned from Dan's concert here at the Paramount Theater in Denver.

It was a wonderful, awesome show and he gave it all he had, plus some.

Very special and what a phenomenal guy and amazing musician.

The Denver audience was very lucky tonite.

Thank you, Dan.

You're the best.

From LoDo Lady:

Much as I wanted to dislike
the show, I have to say it was
surprisingly well done.
I guess he knew that his
popularity in Denver was
waning to say the least,
especially after last year's
1/2 house on the rocks.

We missed the opening act . . .
                         . . . on purpose.

We walked in after
after she left the stage.
The CD played during
intermission was Bryndle,
but only the first 2 songs;
then the Native American
flute music and very quickly
the lights were turned off.
He then appeared on stage
(actually, came up) through
a trap door in the stage floor.
He was playing an old organ
that rose up through the floor.
He played the all-purpose,
every sport theme song
"Rock n' Roll Part 2" by
Gary Glitter.

He moved to his chair and
started with Nexus. He
was wearing black pants,
green shirt, brown jacket
and sandals (no socks).
Most of the show was the
same as the CA venues.
However, he did the new
song "Reason to Run"
which was pretty good.
He left out "The Reach"
and "Morning Sky", but
did 2 encores. He played
for about 1 hour and 50
minutes.

He did joke around a lot.
He said Paris was the
greatest city on earth,
next to Arvada (a city next
to Denver). One lady yelled
out "I love you" and he said
"Thanks, I love you too".
He did not mention anything
about being engaged. He
talked about the new album
coming out next spring.
Before he did "Bones in the
Sky" he talked about living
in the 4 Corners area, next
to Durango. Funny, I thought
Pagosa Springs was 3 hours
from 4 Corners! He talked
about John Lee Hooker and
Chet Atkins and George
Harrison.
His voice was pretty good,
although he did lose it a little
bit on the high notes on
"Longer".

Fish was on the side of the
stage doing the sound, but
he was distracting 'cause he
was out in the open where
he could be seen during the
whole show.
The southwestern rugs were
on the floor.

I guess that about sums it up!

Having been forwarned, at least a quarter of the sellout 2,500 audience chose to stay at the bar during Miss Inghamīs opening act. The historic hall was filled to the brim though when Dan "entered" the stage at 8.45 - in this case thumping on the grotesque in-house organ while being slowly lifted to stage level ("I just couldnīt resist!").

The setlist at the Paramount was the same as in Colorado Springs the night before, with the addition of "Reason to Run" as the third song. Introduced as being a "strong candidate" for his upcoming new album which he told us was already finished and scheduled for a "next Spring or Summer" release, the bittersweet song drew huge cheers, as did the news about the new album in general.

The acoustics were not as excellent as in Colorado Springs, but the sound was pretty clear nevertheless. Dan did not appear as relaxed as he'd been the night before, jokes and one-liners were a lot fewer, as was the audience interaction; but you wouldn't have noticed without having been at both shows. Other differences were that the crowd in Denver got to hear the extended version of "Road Beneath My Wheels", again dedicated to the late John Lee Hooker, topped off with a four-minute slide solo at the end of the song, and a somewhat bluesier version of "Old Lang Syne".

Dan came back for the usual (standing) second encore and played the intro to "Along the Road" over and over and over... finally shaking his head with an amused grin and asking: "Does anybody remember the first line?" This really brought the house down, and after everybody agreed on "Joy at the start..." Dan took the rest of the song from there without any further memory lapses ;-)

He seemed really pleased by the huge cheers and standing ovations of the Denver audience. There was no mention of future tour plans, though - "Good night", "Get home safely" and "See you around" were Danīs final words on both nights.
