Well the annual Dan Fogelberg convention at Red Rocks was a great success. 2
encores ! ! Not since GFTW, eh? Sorry I'll leave the set list to someone that
knows the discography better than I. Netherlands was not on it though.
Personally I decided to go at the last minute to hear if I was just deluded
about the depth of expression of that voice. Nope, I wasn't. Whatever else
anyone may want to speculate on as to his personal life, that guy is one of
the great vocalists of the 20th and 21st century. Easily worth the $33 for G.A.
Count me in as one of those that would pay to here him sing the phone book.
The performances were near flawless, and the only flub was in the second
encore, when he realized his A string was mistuned, but he and the crowd
turned it into a joke and the recovery was smooth and seamless. almost as if
scripted, but it wasn't. I sensed that he was weary as he changed from piano
to guitars and back again, almost shuffling like an old geezer, but hey,
aren't most of us starting to at times? LOL We won't talk about double chins
either. LOL Nonetheless he put everything he had into the show, and as he
walked away with his hands behind his back after the second encore, he seemed
as if he genuinely felt humbled by the 6,000 + turnout. If that was an act,
then hats off to a great actor as well. LOL
He was also very personable, trading many quips with the earlybirds up front.
He even told us all the name of one of his cats, but I'm not tellin'. We'll
see if it's just part of a somewhat canned banter or if indeed, he just opens
himself up more with his hometown crowd.
A must see for any aspiring vocalists that want to see how to really do it.
Opening was Sherry Jackson, a confident self assured soulful sista' songstress,
from the Denver/Boulder Metro area who also knows what makes for an emotive
tune.
about the only negative would have been for the Red Rocks Nazi's that chased
away the 50 or so that wanted to wish Dan adieu from the south terrace. Give a
20 year old whippersnapper a yellow shirt that says "staff" and it
goes right to their head, to try and start telling everyone what to do. Oh
well, judging by the number of Archuleta County License plates backstage, Dan
had a few invited guests that had come up to see him, so you can't blame him
if he wasn't going to make a backdoor appearance for the fans.
All in all, a good time was had by all, including Dan.
