"But I and Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt have cultivated careers where we don't rely on radio. We had our hits, but now it's an educated audience - they chose music, music wasn't chosen for them." Dan Fogelberg ~ 2001 |

"I moved furniture my freshman summer in college in Peoria, Ill. I was really small then. Really skinny. I was playing music and smoking dope. I was not a bulky fellow. They would put two of us college kids on a full Allied truck, and the big beefy drivers wouldn't get off their damn trucks. It was insanity. I'd come home at night, and I couldn't even eat. I was so tired, my mom would put food in front of me and I'd just go to sleep and sleep for 16 hours. That was the summer I said, 'I'm going to be a musician.' "

Ask any rock historian to pinpoint the day the rock era began and virtually all say July 9, 1955, when Bill Haley and the Comets topped Billboard magazine's pop singles chart with (We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock.
With its eight-week
run at No. 1 that year, Rock Around the Clock finally brought
"that evil rock rhythm" to mainstream America and was the harbinger of
things to come.
In honor of rock's birthday, several artists - and a few
other celebrities - offer their all-time
rock favorites, songs that they would (if they could) induct into a rock song
hall of fame:
"Layla by Derek & the Dominos.
I just think that's a magnificent piece of rock 'n' roll, and every time I hear
it, it gives me chills.
I liked that (1992) acoustic version too, until every lounge lizard in America
started playing it.
On tour now we go into the hotel bars and request they NOT play Layla."

Sure there are the hits. Everyone talks about songs like "Same Old
Lang Syne" or "Longer." But Dan Fogelberg was an album guy,
people liked the WHOLE record. In the late '70s everyone you knew had at
least three or four Fogelberg records. And then there was Twin Sons of
Different Mothers, with flutist Tim Weisberg. Now everybody had that
record! The proof was in the yard sales of the early '80s.
Dan Fogelberg's albums were great markers of time. So what if in retrospect,
with all that we've learned since, about all kinds of serious music, he gets
pegged as "light." Light maybe, but still deep. Remember playing
Home Free over and over, especially "Wysteria." Remember
that relationship that didn't work out? And don't even think about being
ashamed you ever liked him. Plenty of "serious" musicians used
to like KISS.
